The Minority Business Development Group & the Harvest Center 2009 Recaps
12/30/09
• The first “Business of the Quarter “ recipient for 2009 was, Kelly Springs of Georgia, chaired by, Ms Mary Oglegree.
• Mr. Jamie Wheelous, owner of Crunk 4 Christ Lawn Care Service became the second “Business of the Quarter” recipient . Mr. Wheelous also received his Home Ownership Certification upon completion of the HUD Certification Course.
• The third quarter award was presented to Mr. Antonio Gates of Gates Construction LLC. This company later acquired assets and launched the asset management company and was renamed, Heragegate, LLC. Mr. Gates continues to grow his business and now shares in training and development initiatives designed to assist others in profitable business initiatives.
• 2009 Spring Business Social shifted its focus and featured an “Information Forum” which highlighted the Georgia Stimulus Package. Keynote speaker, Mr. Michael Cooper, Division Director of Equal Opportunity for the Georgia Department of Transportation, presented an outline of requirements for businesses who wished to qualify for State contract bids, and receive their disadvantaged certification. The social also featured the “Parade of Business Owners” from within Troup County and the surrounding areas.
• The Harvest Center relocated its offices to the Bridgewood Center on Mooty Bridge Road and executed an agreement to train young adults in the area of, Business Development and Office Skills Training Within a Business Setting. A partnership was formed with the Department of Child and Family Services (DEFACS) which provided program participants. The Center was able to secure employment for each of the participants sent through DEFACS.
• The Harvest Center became a member of the Troup County Chamber of Commerce and the Minority Business Development Group welcomed Ms. Vickye Bone, its first chair.
• The VA Entrepreneur Opportunity and the Georgia Businesses Opportunity Group , initiatives were added to the Harvest Center in 2009 and several businesses have worked successfully within the Incubator, during the year.
• The final event of this year, the “Holiday Social and Small Business Awards Banquet” will be held December 12th at the Troup County Chamber of Commerce Building in Lagrange. The keynote address will be presented by Chris Gloss, Author and Motivational Speaker. An exciting feature of this event will be the recognition of MBDG nominees, the selection of the “Business of the Year” recipient and a, Book Signing.
